ECSITE (Early Childhood Science Inquiry Teacher Education) is Cincinnati Museum Center’s professional development program that helps early childhood educators become more confident in their ability to create inquiry-based science experiences for their students.
Developing Confident Science Educators
The ECSITE program consists of workshops focused on sciencing, a teaching approach which incorporates science into other curriculums like literacy, art and math. A mix of science-teaching theory and science content is presented in a fun, interactive way that increases both the competence and confidence of educators.
Providing Educators Science Supplies
In addition to engaging workshops, ECSITE educators leave each workshop with all of the supplies they need to implement what they learned with their students.
Providing Training Hours
Each workshop is an OH Approved training and provides educators with hours needed for Step Up To Quality licensing.
Increasing Kindergarten Readiness Scores
ECSITE focuses on student-constructed learning and shows teachers the benefits and basics of inquiry-based science activities—ultimately giving students opportunities to ask questions, conduct investigations and apply problem-solving skills inside the classroom. Students who learn in classrooms led by ECSITE participants saw an increase in their Kindergarten Readiness Assessment scores.
In 2013, its impact was recognized by a Promising Practice Award from the Association of Children’s Museums.
Overall, 100 percent of educators who participate in ECSITE report feeling more confident teaching science and satisfied with the tools they have to implement science experiences. Most importantly, they notice progress among their students.
“As a preschool teacher you want to be the best you can in order to help your students thrive and succeed. Before ECSITE, I never knew exactly what was appropriate to teach a preschooler and/or how to make it fun for them. Through the trainings and supplies I became confident in my abilities to teach a successful science lesson. I am so thankful for this program because it showed me how to make science hands-on for my students.” -Rosie, ECSITE Educator and Preschool Teacher
