NEW! Solving the Seismic Puzzles of Pompeii (available beginning March 1)
Grades 4-8
Volcanoes, earthquakes and a minor tsunami all played a role in the destruction and preservation of this fascinating city. Take an in-depth look at the seismic events that turned the ancient town of Pompeii into a world renowned archeaological site and understand the history of Mt. Vesuvius to determine when to anticipate the next eruption.

NEW! STEMing it!
Grades 4-8
The relationship between humans and the environment has changed over the past 300 years. Students will learn about how we have impacted the environment from Native Americans to the present concluding with an exploration of modern technology and conservation methods. This program includes a guided experience in the Museum of Natural History & Science's Pathways to Change exhibit.

Be a Space Ace
Grades 5-8
Help scientists discover clues about the planets in our universe. Through problem solving and hands-on experimentation the students will participate in activities that are out of this world! Perfect when paired with our OMNIMAX film, Hubble.

Simple Machines at Work (and Play)
Grades 1-3
After a fun introduction to simple machines, employ big doses of experimentation and creativity to analyze each machine station in the Duke Energy Children's Museum Energy Zone. Discover the function of each and which simple machines are used to accomplish jobs both big and small. Available Tuesday through Friday only.

Cave Dwellers
Grades 1-4
The cave is home to many animals and plants. Deepen your students' appreciation of the delicate ecosystem of caves and the roles that people play in preserving the home of cave dwellers. This program includes a guided experience in the Museum of Natural History & Science's famous limestone cave. Combine this program with the OMNIMAX film, Journey into Amazing Caves. Can accommodate a larger group of 60 students.

Dinosaur Discovery
Grades 1-5
Become a junior paleontologist and explore the size and bone structure of dinosaurs while using the tools of the trade, including fossil replicas. This program includes a guided experience in the Museum of Natural History & Science's Dino Hall. Perfect with the Dinosaurs Alive! OMNIMAX film.

Be A "Rock" Star
Grades 3-6
Take on the role of a geologist and follow the rock cycle by performing experiments to learn how rocks are formed. Discover the different properties of rocks and categorize them based on a set of criteria. Combine this program with the OMNIMAX film, Ring of Fire. Can accommodate a larger group of 60 students.

Forces of Nature
Grades 4-8
Hurricanes, tornadoes, volcanoes and earthquakes… Take a closer look at how these monster storms and earth shattering events form and how scientists study them. Explore some of the key principles of meteorology and seismology and examine some of the technology that is helping scientists learn about how they form or how to prepare for their wrath. Students work in teams to create their own hypotheses through hands-on experimentation. Can accommodate a larger group of 60 students, but will require a time extension of 30 additional minutes for a fee of $200.

Toying with Physics
Grades 5-9
Explore physics through toy-based science activities. Students investigate the laws of motion with emphasis on gravitational and kinetic energy. Through scientific inquiry students use the skills of prediction, observation, explanation and summary.
