Science Learning Labs
Available Monday through Friday at 9:30, 10:30, 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Approximately 50 minutes, maximum 30 students.
Students have the opportunity for hands-on activities that bring exhibit concepts to life. Science Learning Labs integrate curriculum standards and create a full classroom experience for students of all ages.
NEW! Be a Space Ace // PDF
Grades 5-8
Help scientists discover clues about the planets in our universe. Through problem solving and hands-on experimentation the students will participate in activities that are out of this world!
Circulation, Respiration and Bodies in Motion //PDF
Grades 4-8
Students classify organ systems in the human body, identify their specialized functions and investigate how these systems work together. After a fun physical fitness test, students will calculate their own lung capacity, heart rate and muscular endurance, record their data and compare results. Combine this program with a visit to BODIES...The Exhibition. Simple Machines at Work (and Play) // PDF
Grades 1-3
After a fun introduction to simple machines, employ big doses of experimentation and creativity to analyze each machine station in the Duke Energy Children's Museum Energy Zone. Discover the function of each and which simple machines are used to accomplish jobs both big and small. (Available Tuesday through Friday only.)
Cave Dwellers // PDF
Grades 1-4
The cave is home to many animals and plants. Deepen your students' appreciation of the delicate ecosystem of caves and the roles that people play in preserving the home of cave dwellers. This program includes a guided experience in the Museum of Natural History & Science's famous limestone cave.Combine this program with the OMNIMAX film Journey into Amazing Caves.
Dinosaur Discovery // PDF
Grades 1-5
Become a paleontologist and explore the size and bone structure of dinosaurs while using the tools of the trade, including fossil replicas. This program includes a guided experience in the Museum of Natural History & Science's Dino Hall.
Ice Age Animals // PDF
Grades 2-5
Cincinnati and the rest of North America were very different 19,000 years ago. Examine animal bones, teeth and fossil replicas to discover
the basic characteristics of several Ice Age animals and how they
have changed over time. This program includes a guided experience in the Museum of Natural History & Science's Ice Age exhibit..
Be A "Rock" Star // PDF
Grades 3-6
Take on the role of a geologist and follow the rock cycle by performing experiments to learn how rocks are formed. Discover the different properties of rocks and categorize them based on a set of criteria. Combine this program with the OMNIMAX film Ring of Fire.
Forces of Nature: Meteorology // PDF
Grades 4-8
Hurricanes and tornados affect millions of people every year, yet scientists still know little about how they form or how to prepare for their wrath. Explore some of the key principles of meteorology and examine some of the technology that is helping meteorologists to predict the weather every day.
Combine this program with the OMNIMAX film Storm Chasers or Forces of Nature.
Forces of Nature: Seismology // PDF
Grades 4-8
Earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis are more common than you might think.
Explore the forces at work that create these catastrophic events. Students will work in teams to create their own hypotheses through hands-on experimentation. Combine this program with the OMNIMAX film Ring of Fire or Forces of Nature.
Toying with Physics // PDF
Grades 5-9
Explore physics through toy-based science activities. Students investigate the laws of motion with emphasis on gravitational and kinetic energy. Through scientific inquiry students use the skills of prediction, observation, explanation and summary.
