In the Dark Earthworks The Alpha Kappa Alpha Story

In the Dark

June 10 through September 4, 2006

This summer, experience a place of mystery and obscurity. Discover a place that may instill fear but will also fascinate you beyond your wildest dreams. Journey In the Dark and unravel one of nature’s greatest mysteries.

The renowned exhibit In the Dark features five remarkable areas that appeal to adults and children alike. These areas include “Nocturnal Environments,” “Underground Environments,” “Caverns,” “Deep Sea Environments” and “Humans In the Dark.” The common theme between these five areas is that they make a largely unseen world viewable, unraveling the mysteries of nature in the dark.

Of special interest to visitors is “The Darkness of Night” section, which features a large walk-around diorama of a nocturnal forest in the Great Smoky Mountains, as well as smaller dioramas of the Sonoran desert and a Louisiana Cypress swamp at night. Each area of the exhibit includes dioramas—some life-size—of natural settings as well as an interactive section that allows visitors to experience the wonders of the dark.

Exhibit features include:

  • Fun facts that educate visitors about secrets of wildlife at night

  • In Darkness of the Deep Sea, visitors plummet to the depths of the sea and explore an environment that is eternally dark and does not depend on the world of light as a source of energy.

  • Darkness and Humans explores the myths and legends that have arisen in different cultures to interpret night and darkness; the history of making light; and examines how humans have created technological adaptations to the dark.

  • A hands-on interactive section that is designed to engage families in nocturnal behavior in nature, as if they were in the environmental setting.

In the Dark was built by Cincinnati Museum Center’s own Traveling Exhibit department and was originally exhibited here 10 years ago. It has since traveled to over 23 venues and has been visited by more than one million people.
