Lighting Candles: Embracing the Spirit of the Holiday Season November 24, 2006 through January 7, 2007 This holiday season, the Ruthven Gallery glows with the warm beams of light from the mixed media paintings of Cincinnati artist Annie Ruth. Lighting Candles: Embracing the Spirit of the Holiday Season features images of candles used to celebrate the holidays of Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa and educates visitors about the significance of light to each of these celebrations. In addition to the exhibit, Ms. Ruth will host Lighting Another Candle, an interactive performance and gallery talk featuring music, poetry and storytelling. This program, designed for all ages, celebrates diversity by focusing on the themes of light and “lighting the world” during the holiday season. Lighting Another Candle will take place in the Ruthven Gallery on December 16, 28 and 30 at 2 p.m. Ms. Ruth will also host a written word workshop on December 9 at 2 p.m. Designed for participants 16 years and older, this workshop will focus on using the images in the exhibit as inspiration for verse about light and the holidays. Participants can use their creations for holiday greeting cards or personal gifts. The workshop is free but space is limited. Participants must register no later than two weeks in advance by calling (513) 287-7021. Annie Ruth is an award-winning visual and performing artist who was the 2003 Taft Museum of Art Duncanson Artist-in-Residence, commissioned artist for Fifth Third Bank’s Profiles in Courage Award, illustrator of When My Mama Reads to Me by Julie Elkus and recipient of Sankofa’s 2004 Kuumba (Creativity) Award. Annie has been named a Cincinnati Enquirer Woman of the Year, a YMCA Career Woman of Achievement and a recipient of the Post-Corbett Award for Literary Arts. |
