Thoreau's Walden: A Journey in PhotographsFebruary 4 through May 7 In 1999, photographer Scot Miller embarked on a journey to retrace Henry David Thoreau’s footsteps during his time spent at Walden in the 1840s. Miller spent many hours in every season trekking through Walden Woods with his camera, fighting off mosquitoes in the summer and feeling the ice of the pond crack beneath his feet in the winter. The resulting exhibit, Thoreau’s Walden: A Journey in Photographs by Scot Miller, traces his personal photographic journey as reminiscent of the one taken by Thoreau some 150 ago, and carries a consistent message of personal appreciation of nature that in turn encourages stewardship and conservation. The inspiration for this exhibit, Walden: 150th Anniversary Illustrated Edition of the American Classic, is a reprint of Thoreau’s classic, published in 2004 by Houghton Mifflin. The book has enjoyed popular success and critical acclaim. The companion book is available for purchase in Cincinnati Museum Center’s gift shop. Thoreau’s Walden features:
Thoreau’s Walden: A Journey in Photographs by Scot Miller was developed by the Harvard Museum of Natural History (HMNH) in cooperation with Scot Miller and the Walden Woods Project and is sponsored nationally by Houghton Mifflin. It is the second exhibit that has come to Cincinnati as a result of Museum Center’s partnership with the Harvard Museum of Natural History. Cincinnati Museum Center will also manage the exhibit’s national tour.
