Exposition of Historic Industry and Commerce

Did you know that Cincinnati is home to dozens of businesses dating back to the 19th century and more than 100 that predate World War II? Visit Cincinnati Museum Center the first weekend in October and discover the wealth of history our local business community has to offer. This three-day, interactive event in the Cincinnati History Museum features displays, historic industrial artifacts and activities for the entire family!

Local businesses: As part of our special programming, we welcome representatives from the following local businesses. See their historical displays and artifacts and talk with them about the history of their company and connection to the region today!

Scavenger hunt: Kids will love searching for the industrial-themed I-Spy in our Cincinnati in Motion exhibit as well as completing a scavenger hunt for History Museum prizes!

Costumed interpreters will be throughout the History Museum portraying business entrepreneurs, factory workers and merchants from Cincinnati’s past:

  • Encounter a frontier fur trader in Early Settlement to learn about one of this region’s earliest forms of commerce and the interactions these entrepreneurial pioneers had with Native Americans.
  • In Cincinnati Goes to War, meet a World War II factory worker and discover the transformation local industries made in order to stay operational and to support the war effort.
  • Visit our Machine Tool Gallery and talk with a 19th century machinist to learn about our city’s role during the industrial revolution, see the operations of a lathe, shaper and milling machine with an interconnected belt driven system.
  • Hear a presentation by John A. Roebling, builder of the Cincinnati Covington Suspension Bridge (now called the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge), on the Public Landing in the Cincinnati History Museum on Saturday at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and on Sunday at noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

     

Vintage advertisements and cartoons: Free to all visitors are screenings of vintage advertisements from the early days of television as well as short films on local industry and commerce in the Rotunda's Newsreel Theater. Stop by and take a seat in this historic venue! The schedule is the same for all three days of the event, except as otherwise noted:

10 a.m.

Short documentaries (Friday and Saturday only): A Mattel toy factory in the 1950s, a Chevrolet workers film from 1937 and Easy Does It, about work done by women in the home in 1940.

11 a.m.

Vintage Cartoons about industry and commerce: Porky’s Poultry Plant (1936), Mickey Mouse Building a Building (1933) and Boat Builders with Mickey, Donald and Goofy (1938).

Noon

Vintage commercials from the 1930s through 1950s.

12:30 p.m.

Aeronca Aircraft Corporation documentary from 1946.

1:30 p.m.

Greetings From Coney Island, documentary on the development of the amusement park from the mid-19th century to present day.

2:30 p.m.

Vintage commercials from the 1930s through 1950s.

3 p.m.

Under These Stars, a training video from 1952 that takes you through Procter & Gamble's Ivorydale factory.

4 p.m.

Vintage Cartoons about industry and commerce: Porky’s Café (1942), Steamboat Willie (1928) and Donald Duck and Modern Inventions (1937).

5 p.m.

Short documentaries (Sunday only): A Mattel toy factory in the 1950s, a Chevrolet workers film from 1937 and Easy Does It, about work done by women in the home in 1940.
