Winter Solstice Celebrations
Come and celebrate holidays around the world! Enjoy free, fun, hands-on activities about Hanukkah, Chinese New Year, Diwali, Christmas around the world and Kwanzaa in the lobby of the Duke Energy Children's museum. Be here for our Hanukkah kick-off celebration with our first Rotunda Dreidel Tournament, and make sure to celebrate Kwanzaa with us on the last Sunday of December!
All activities take place between noon and 3 p.m. on the following dates:
Dec. 1: Hanukkah
Learn about dreidels while participating in our first Rotunda Dreidel Tournament, and find out how stained glass windows are used to celebrate the miracles of Hanukkah.
Dec. 8: Chinese New Year
Make a dragon while learning about the Chinese calendar year, how each year is a different animal and what they represent. Plus, decorate your own lantern to take home with you in honor of the Lantern Festival, the last day of the Chinese New Year Celebration.
Dec. 15: Diwali
Learn about the holiday while working together to create a Rangoli design, popular throughout Hindu culture, and make your own small lantern to signify the triumph of good over evil.
Dec. 22 & 23: Christmas Around the World
Visit different tables to learn about how Christmas is celebrated in different cultures.
Dec. 29: Kwanzaa
Make your own candles while learning about the Kinara and the role it plays in this holiday, and make your own family tree.
