Cincinnati Heritage Programs Docent
Flexible shifts
Cincinnati Heritage Programs is an outreach association of Cincinnati Museum Center whose mission is to inspire people to learn and appreciate the region's history. The docents of the all-volunteer organization present audio-visual programs and public tours to community groups throughout the Tri-state. In addition, docents also present guided tours of Union Terminal on weekends and holidays. Applicants must be comfortable with public speaking and enjoy historical research. Applicants must commit to a minimum 10-week training course. After completion of training, new docents will be expected to attend monthly meetings and professional development sessions during weekdays. Cincinnati Heritage Programs Rotunda Tour Guide
Saturday and Sunday afternoons
Cincinnati Heritage Programs is an outreach association
of Cincinnati Museum Center whose mission is to inspire people to learn
and appreciate the region's history. Cincinnati Heritage Programs is recruiting
volunteers who have a love of architecture, art and Union Terminal. They
must be interested in leading Rotunda Tours to share their knowledge,
love and enthusiasm for Art-Deco beauty. Guides must be comfortable with
public speaking and must be able to stand and walk for extended periods
of time. Regular shift times are Saturday and Sunday afternoons; however,
tours at other times may be scheduled occasionally. Training will be provided.
Canal
Exhibit Guide
Flexible shifts – during Museum hours
The Cincinnati History Museum is seeking volunteers to serve as interpreters
in our canal exhibit. No prior experience is necessary, but an interest
in canals and a willingness to learn about the Miami Erie Canal and the
Miami Whitewater Canal is required. Due to the nature of this exhibit,
volunteers must also enjoy working with small children. Volunteers will
need good customer service, visual, oral and hearing skills and training
is required.

Goes to War Exhibit Guide
Flexible shifts – during Museum hours
The Cincinnati History Museum is looking for volunteers with an interest
in Cincinnati during the 1940s to engage visitors in our Cincinnati Goes
to War exhibit. Volunteers will discuss WWII’s impact on Cincinnati
and life on the homefront. Some prior knowledge of WWII history is desirable,
but not required. Volunteers may be asked to perform simple demonstrations
and will need good customer service, visual, oral and hearing skills.
Training is required.

History Museum Exhibit Guide
Flexible shifts – during Museum hours
The Cincinnati History Museum is recruiting volunteers who share our passionate
belief in Museum Center’s mission to inspire people of all ages
to understand and appreciate regional history, as well as stimulate curiosity
and promote enjoyment of learning. Applicants should be willing to aid
visitors, interpret exhibits and facilitate learning in all areas, and
to learn via training and ongoing professional development opportunities.
Volunteers should be focused on providing excellent customer service,
which includes engaging communication skills with people of all ages,
as well as being friendly, helpful and energetic. A background in history
and/or education is a plus but not required. Training is required.
Cincinnati
in Motion Exhibit Guide
Flexible shifts – during Museum hours
The Cincinnati History Museum is looking for volunteers with a love of
Cincinnati history and geography to interpret our Cincinnati in Motion
exhibit. Volunteers will answer questions about Cincinnati between 1900
and 1940 and questions about the model itself. Must be able to alert staff
to problems within the exhibit. General knowledge of the layout of Cincinnati
and basic Cincinnati history is desirable, but not required. Applicants
may be asked to perform simple demonstrations and must have the ability
to stand for long periods of time. Volunteers will also need good customer
service, visual, oral and hearing skills. Training is required.
Early
Settlement Exhibit Guide
Flexible shifts – during Museum hours
The Cincinnati History Museum is seeking local history enthusiasts to
serve as guides and perform demonstrations in our Early Settlement exhibit.
No prior experience is necessary, but a strong interest in early Cincinnati
history and culture and an outgoing personality are musts! Volunteers
will need good customer service, visual, oral and hearing skills and training
is required.
First
Person Interpreter
Flexible shifts – during Museum hours
First Person Interpreters dress in period clothing and interpret life
on Cincinnati’s Public Landing in 1863. In this position, volunteers
assume the persona of someone of the given time period and discuss their
character and his/her background, as well as life in Civil War era Cincinnati.
Period clothing is provided by the museum. Excellent customer service
skills are a necessity, along with an engaging communication style and
an enthusiasm for Cincinnati history. Volunteers in this position may
be standing for extended periods of time and will need good visual, oral
and hearing skills. Six months of prior volunteer experience in the Cincinnati
History Museum is required, along with completion of volunteer training
and first person training.
Flatboat
Exhibit Guide
Flexible shifts – during Museum hours
The Cincinnati History Museum is seeking volunteers to serve as interpreters
in our flatboat exhibit. Volunteers will talk about the role of flatboat
in the settlement of the Cincinnati area and perform demonstrations. No
experience is necessary, but a strong interest in Ohio River history is
required. Must possess good customer service, visual, oral and hearing
skills and be able to complete mandatory training.
Immigration
Gallery Guide/Public Landing Greeter
Schedule varies to coordinate with Interpreter staff
The Cincinnati History Museum is seeking volunteers to work as gallery
guides in our immigration exhibit and as greeters to visitors entering
the Public Landing. Volunteers will discuss immigration in the Cincinnati
area and answer questions and also introduce visitors to our Public Landing
exhibit, telling them about first person interpretation and what they
are about to encounter as they enter the exhibit. This position requires
standing for long periods of time, as well as good customer service, visual,
oral and hearing skills Schedules will be coordinated with those of the
interpreters and training is required.
Machine
Tool Exhibit Interpreter
Flexible shifts – during Museum hours
Volunteers in this position provide interpretation in the Cincinnati History
Museum’s exhibit, Forming a New World: Cincinnati’s Machine
Tool Industry, 1850-1930. Dressing in period clothing, which is provided
by the museum, is optional. Interpreters will interact with the visitors,
explaining about the importance of the machine tool industry to Cincinnati
in the late 19th and early 20th century. Volunteers may operate the machinery
if they have prior experience in either machining or engineering. Training
is required.
Newsstand
Attendant/Museum Hospitality Greeter
Flexible shifts – during Museum hours
Welcome and greet arriving visitors at the entrance to the Cincinnati
History Museum. A friendly, welcoming, enthusiastic personality is needed
along with the ability to approach and engage visitors in a busy environment.
Must be comfortable working with large groups. General knowledge of the
museum and excellent customer service skills are necessary and training
will be provided. Volunteers in this position may be standing for long
periods of time and will need good visual, oral and hearing skills. Training
is required.
