All aboard for Holiday Junction at Cincinnati Museum Center

Opens November 25 in the Cincinnati History Museum

(Cincinnati, OH) Sixty years ago Union Terminal was rumbling with the sounds of trains dropping off and picking up travelers. The trains are rolling back into Union Terminal just in time for the holiday season. Going into its 12th year at Cincinnati Museum Center, Holiday Junction hasn’t lost any steam.

From November 25 through January 1, visitors to the Cincinnati History Museum can wander through a wonderland of miniature train displays presented by local model train clubs and collectors. A fanciful 2000-square-foot, O-gauge layout includes several trains running simultaneously through a four-level set. Highlighted by a theatrical background, the layout becomes the setting for the detailed trains—48 times smaller than life.

Four model train layouts duplicate what many children longed for during the holiday season. In addition, Cincinnati’s own Carlisle and Finch displays some of the oldest model trains ever produced, and Cincinnati Museum Center features some model trains from its own collection as well.

Model train enthusiasts—both young and old—can view cases of vintage trains, talk with the on-site train-masters, enjoy hands-on activities and other special displays sure to enhance the holiday fun. Though the model trains are for everyone to enjoy, children can escape to their own holiday wonderland on a special kid-size train that takes them through a magnificent winter scene.

Tickets for Holiday Junction are included in admission to the Cincinnati History Museum. Discount prices are offered when a ticket to more than one attraction is purchased. Explorer members and Cincinnati History Museum members are admitted free.

Santa to visit Union Terminal on weekends

Though it’s his busy season, Santa Claus is putting aside a few hours each weekend to make a special stop at Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal. Santa will enchant children with the magic of the season with singing, storytelling and even the possibility of seeing his magical reindeer! He will collect the wish lists of good girls and boys who come to visit him. Santa will be available for those who would like to take photos.

Santa will be in the Rotunda from 1 to 3 p.m. on:

  • Friday, November 25

  • Saturday, November 26

  • Sunday, November 27

  • Saturdays, December 3, 10 and 17

  • Sundays, December 4, 11 and 18

Don’t miss Tower A!

When Union Terminal opened in 1933, approximately 216 trains entered and departed each day. To prevent chaos at the mainlines and platforms, Tower A acted as the control tower of Union Terminal. A train director in the tower controlled the movement of incoming and outgoing trains with track switches activated by electro-pneumatic machines and by carefully monitoring a track diagram board.

In the 1990s, the Cincinnati Railroad Club restored Tower A to its original appearance, including fixtures, furniture and monitoring devices. The Cincinnati Railroad Club still maintains Tower A, as well as the largest railroad library in the Tri-State area, and conducts tours of the space on Saturdays.

During the run of Holiday Junction, Tower A will be open to the public on a daily basis; there is no charge for admission. Please note that access to Tower A requires the use of stairs.

Cincinnati Museum Center gratefully acknowledges operating and capital support from the

City of Cincinnati, Hamilton County and the State of Ohio.
