Museum of Natural History & Science Interacts
With All Ages
General
Information Sheet
The exhibits of the Museum of Natural History &
Science captivate people of all ages. Exhibit features span many parts
of the globe, but have a special emphasis on the natural and geological
history of the Ohio Valley.
The Children's Discovery Center (CDC)
The CDC consists of three major hands on areas: All About You, Pathways
to Change and Pathways Nature Station. All About You teaches children
about the workings of the human body and emphasizes healthy living choices.
Pathways to Change allows visitors to travel through time and learn how
people in the Cincinnati area have adapted to and changed their environment
through the ages. The outdoor Pathways Nature Station contains a variety
of plants that bloom into a beautiful garden in the spring and summer.
Earth Stories: The Working Museum
Follow the story of a Paleo-Indian spear point from ancient to modern
times in scenes that come to life with the press of a button. Witness
the inner workings of the museum in this “behind-the-scenes”
tour. Discover artifacts from local Indians and prehistoric cultures.
The Cave: A World Without Light
One of the museum’s most popular exhibits, The Cave is a simulated
Kentucky limestone cavern, complete with underground waterfalls, streams,
fossils and a live bat colony. There are two different cave trails: one
is handicapped accessible and one is for the cave-hardy!
Cincinnati's Ice Age: Clues Frozen in Time
Act like a detective to uncover clues about how the local land formed
as well as evidence that links extinct animals to the animals we know
today. Step back 19,000 years ago into the Ohio Valley during the Ice
Age. Walk through a glacier and come “face-to-face” with a
one ton ground sloth and saber toothed cat.
Collections and Research Gallery
Presentations featuring global projects and research by museum scientists.
Nature’s Trading Post
Here, children and families learn the ethics and fun of responsible collecting
and achieve an understanding that the intrinsic value of an item lies
not only with the item itself but with the engaging experience of sharing
and gaining knowledge. Visitors can bring in their own findings to share
and earn points toward trading for items from the museum’s collection
of rocks, minerals, and other natural objects.
Fossil Preparation Lab
Watch as solid rock obtained during recent dig expeditions is chipped
away, revealing the fossils of creatures living millions of years ago,
as scientists from the Museum of Natural History & Science clean,
stabilize and preserve them in the glass-enclosed laboratory – all
before your eyes!
Dino Hall
This exhibit poses the question, “What do you think killed off the
dinosaurs?” The exhibit area includes a fossil timeline path, an
interactive dinosaur resource center with books, activities, special demonstrations
and programs, dinosaur models and other fossils from the Ohio Valley area.
Look up to see the giant flying Pterosaur suspended overhead and imagine
what it was like when dinosaurs ruled the world.
Preschool Sandplay Area
This area is a fun environment for children five years of age and younger
and their caregivers. Children can use tools and toys to dig and play
in the sand area, study the world on an oversized floor-map or choose
a book to read and enjoy.
The Museum of Natural History & Science traces
its origins to the Western Museum Society, which was founded in 1818 by
a group of men who combined their personal collections of natural history
artifacts and introduced them to the public in 1819. John James Audubon,
hired as a taxidermist, was the first paid employee.
Admission to the Museum of Natural History &
Science is $7.25 for adults and $5.25 for children (ages 3-12). Children
ages 1-2 are admitted to all museums for $4.25. Seniors (ages 60+) receive
a $1 discount. Members are admitted free. Prices are subject to change.
The museum is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday,
11 a.m. to 6 p.m. For membership information, call (513) 287-7000 or 1-800-733-2077.
