Earthworks: Virtual Explorations of the Ancient Ohio Valley

A traveling exhibition from the University of Cincinnati’s

CERHAS program produced in conjunction with

the Cincinnati Museum Center and funded by a grant

from the National Endowment for the Humanities

Modern technology brings to life the ancient constructions of the early inhabitants of the Ohio Valley region.

Cultures that flourished there 800 to 2,400 years ago built earthen effigies, embankments, mounds, roadways and geometric enclosures of astonishing size and precision. Many contained exquisite ceremonial artifacts. Some are astronomical markers more exact than Stonehenge. Yet these ruins—destroyed by years of farming, industry and urban sprawl—remained largely unknown to most outside the field of archaeology.

Now visual imaging technology developed by CERHAS at the University of Cincinnati, models, and two-dimensional graphics provide the tools to see these prehistoric marvels and learn how the cultures known as the Adena, Hopewell and Fort Ancient built them.

About CERHAS
