Cincinnati Museum Center’s Cincinnati History Library and Archives was awarded a State Library of Ohio Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) Grant of $4,999 for the project, “Cataloging the World War 1 Servicemen Portrait Collection”. The following is an interview with Margaret Breidenbaugh, LSTA grant funded cataloger. Margaret, can you tell us a little about yourself? I hail from Chillicothe, which was Ohio’s first (and third!) state capital. I have a BA in Music from Capital University, where I received training in composition and vocal performance. CMC Awarded Grant to Catalog World War 1 Servicemen Portrait Collection

Cincinnati Museum Center’s Cincinnati History Library and Archives was awarded a State Library of Ohio Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) Grant of $4,999 for the project, “Cataloging the World War 1 Servicemen Portrait Collection”. A little about the collection: Between December 14-22, 1918, about 160,000 visitors flocked to the United States and Allied Governments War Exposition in Cincinnati’s Music Hall, where 6,000 portraits of service members were first displayed. A “Gold Star” room was designated for those who had given their lives in service. Mostly women volunteers, many of whom were mothers of soldiers, watched over the photographs of local area servicemen and women. The local organizing committee returned the photographs to the lenders with a letter from Executive Secretary Edwin E. Meyers asking the lenders to donate a copy of their photograph to the Historical and Philosophical Society of Ohio (HPSO), the predecessor organization […]
