May 12 is World Migratory Bird Day in the Americas! Migratory Bird Day started in 1993, and is sponsored by many organizations including the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and the Smithsonian. This day celebrates birds that travel up and down the Americas each year as they move from their wintering grounds to their breeding grounds. Many of the birds you see in the summer travel to Central or South America for the winter months. There are approximately 350 migratory bird species that breed in North America – over half the total bird species in North America are migrants!
