Civic Architecture: The Panoramic Photography of Thomas R. Schiff
From small county courthouses to the U.S. Capitol, Civic Architecture: The Panoramic Photography of Thomas R. Schiff considers how we express our highest ideals in the structures of our buildings. See how our civic architecture has changed over two centuries – from exalted temples to organic forms – and contemplate how these centers of government have sought to rise above or blend in with their surrounding landscapes.
Through more than 60 photographs by Schiff, viewers are transported to recognizable spaces while others offer surprising and delightfully disorienting views of buildings we thought that we knew. Schiff’s unique panoramic camera captures building interiors in a full 360º sweep causing objects closer to the lens to distort the image and providing a new angle and perspective on some of our most common structures.
